Maggies - Maggies Cancer Care May 4/5th If stunning scenery and a 24-hour challenge is your thing, then this is definitely the event for you. You’ll cycle 30 miles and then hike 43 miles from Fort William to Inverness – a grand total of 73 miles! As you follow the Great Glen Way from under the shadow of Ben Nevis you’ll cross over the Caledonian Canal, hike through forests and farmland along the length of Loch Ness. By the time you reach Inverness you will be both exhausted and elated at having completed such a fantastic challenge. Now in its eighth year the 4,500 people who have taken part in Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike have raised over £3.6 million to help build and run Maggie’s cancer support centres across the UK. The centres offer free practical, emotional and psychological support to people with cancer, together with their families and carers. Etap Caledonia – May 12th -Marie Curie The Etape Caledonia is an 81 mile cycle challenge taking place on traffic-free roads in the stunning scenery of Highland Perthshire. The event on 13th May 2012 is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 80. To ensure that the roads are reopened to the schedule agreed with the authorities, participants will need to maintain an average speed of 13mph around the course. This gives at least 6h 15mins to reach the finishing line within the closure window. Trossachs Ton– Action Medical Research June 16th The Trossachs Ton ride is fast establishing itself as one of the ‘must do’ cycle events in Scotland, be sure to book your place early. The Trossachs region is an area of outstanding beauty with the big climbs that cyclists crave, including the Duke’s Pass. The 13-mile almost traffic-free section of Loch Katrine is a joy to ride with a mixture of climbs, tight bends and descents along the waters edge. Rob Roy Challenge - Martin Currie June 22rd Now in its seventh year, the Martin Currie Rob Roy Challenge has become one of Scotland’s most successful fundraising events. Starting at Drymen, participants follow in the footsteps of the outlaw and folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor with a 16 mile hike through the beautiful Trossachs to Callander. Then it’s ‘on yer bike’ for the tough 39 mile ride to Killin and along the south side of Loch Tay to the finish at Kenmore. Friends and family can join you on Saturday evening for our legendary Hog Roast Feast, lively ceilidh and world class fireworks, followed by camping or accommodation in local hotels and a Sunday morning breakfast. Kindrochit Quadrathlon - Artemis July 13th One day. Four challenges. Have you got what it takes? Invesco Perpetual Highland Adventure Race - Mitchemp Trust. September 8th The Invesco Perpetual Highland Adventure Race is a great team building event, held annually, in aid of the Mitchemp Trust. This year, it takes place in the rugged terrain and beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Teams of 4-6 people will cycle, hike and canoe 60 miles in 24 hours, from east to west Scotland, in an effort to be crowned Winner of the Invesco Perpetual Highland Adventure Race 2011. Pedal for Scotland /Sky ride September 8th The classic freshnlo Pedal for Scotland ride, the challenge ride is now in its 14th year. The 47 mile Glasgow to Edinburgh ride is Scotland's biggest bike ride and attracted 8000 participants last year. The reason for the ride's huge popularity is the combination of a great route that uses a mixture of closed roads, quiet back roads and cycle paths and the fact that it takes in Scotland's two largest cities via stunning countryside. It's the perfect challenge for both regular cyclists and those who haven't cycled in a while - a few weeks training is enough to get in shape. There are rest stops around every ten miles serving free refreshments, plus a free lunch at the beautiful Linlithgow Palace, topped of with entertainment and activities in Edinburgh, making for the perfect active day out for groups of friends, family or work mates Sportive. The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Sportive is a new ride of 100 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
